The fights to get them were generally pretty cool but I actually hated the Runelord one. He's easy as pie until you get to his final phase and then if you let him get even one attack in you pretty much get status locked until your party is wiped, not a good time. Died twice because I wasn't using an obviously broken comp and it kind of felt like the game telling me that I'm wrong for trying to have fun. I'm also a bit worried that Saving Grace feels a little TOO necessary for this style of super boss.

Oh shit, you're right in the middle of all the game's best parts. So much that happens in the last stretch of the game is so damn good. Rokurou blocking Shigure's mystic arte is one of the coolest in-battle things the series has ever done IMO, topped only by (Vesperia PS3 spoilers) Rita learning Indignation by using it to 1HKO Dhaos.

Also super glad you seem to be gelling well with chaos mode. It's super satisfying to be able to play this game at the highest level, so it's awesome you stuck with it! Have you been mostly playing Velvet or have you dabbled in the other crew?

Are caits area-specific? I'm nearly done with Chapter 3 with all characters, 30-something hours into the game and I've only seen one and it was way back during someone's chapter 1 before I even knew it was a special enemy. (And that one ran away!)

Ahhhh holy shit Olberic chapter 3. Challenge this person? Legit gave me chills, that was one of the cooler things this game has done. Shame I was honestly way more siding with Erhardt than Olberic when all of that went down. =X

Holy crap Grandport is absolutely unreal. I rushed there because I heard it was full of all kinds of amazing gear to steal but was a bit dismayed to find them all at 3%. Knew I wouldn't want to do that much savescumming so I was getting ready to just pick out a couple of things... but then I found the Thieving Tips and Tricks in town and pretty much the entire town shot up to 100% success. O_O

Fuyuki already has an OVA so honestly I feel like a really quick mention of Solomon is all they need to be fully caught up. None of the other stuff in the earlier singularities is all that important in a big picture sense.

I haven't completely looked over the guide for the event but my understanding is you should just roll with whichever one you have the best bonus servant set-up for. I think eventually you'll need to farm every material anyway to clear out the shop, though?

I've never personally had any interest in Eugenics Emblem (like, on my sole run of Awakening I didn't even pick up any of the kids) but out of curiosity, is there any comparably "perfect" set up figured out for Fates? I figure the exclusive units plus Revelations' extra possibilities means there are at least two lists if so.

The party being so morally grey is one of the best things about the game's cast, I love it so much. Early on I thought for sure that Eleanor joining the group would ruin the dynamic but it only ended up making it stronger.

Level doesn't necessarily matter so much compared to good equipment. Steal/buy/find some strong stuff and you can easily take on stuff over your level.

Yeah I just finished doing a loop of the chapter 2 cities just for stealing and shopping and uh, holy mother of god that's a massive power jump. Cyrus in particular feels like he's flat out breaking the game at this point lol

I do wonder if steal-scumming is a little bit too good in this game. Like, obviously you don't have to do it but the insane power gain you get from doing so will naturally make most people want to do it. And that can be a lot of time spent just cheating the game rather than actually playing it. >_>

Started on Chapter 2 stuff finally... and actually lost to Tressa's boss! Game felt a far too easy up to this point but that felt like a really huge spike... guess I shouldn't complain! Though it might matter that even after clearing all of the Chapter 1s I'm still pretty underleveled for this guy going by the recommendation. (Average party level is like 7 below recommended)

Maybe I should turn off Evasive Maneuvers?

Dire foes can be very tough depending on when/where you bump in to them - on higher difficulties I'd say there's no shame in running from them if you gauge you're not quite ready for one when you bump in to it.

On higher difficulties, enemies are always going to be significantly higher level for you, so don't worry about that. Like, on the highest difficulty random mobs will typically always be dozens of levels higher.

But that's okay! Level doesn't really matter very much in this game. What's important is your skill and your gear. If you're not keeping up on that front, the difficulties above hard will get much, much tougher. The game is cool about this and rewards you for playing those difficulties with a 10% drop rate increase for gear per difficulty level above normal.

I like everyone to some degree so far but Cyrus and Tressa definitely stand out as really good characters at first blush. Very happy I just happened to pick Cyrus as my main going in blank.

Free refills are the standard pretty much across the board where I live except for smaller Asian places - but what Pun said here is also true and it's SUPER WEIRD to me.

Like I can understand charging more if you're switching from a fountain drink to like, milk or beer, but getting re-charged for switching from one soda to another is just odd.

I found derivative artes occasionally useful for the characters who actually got too many good moves to map. (To my mind, this is really only Velvet and Rokurou)

There's an equivalent (but simpler) idea for spells in this game too though and those are absolutely essential in getting the most out of the game's spellcasters. (This includes mixed fighters like Eizen and to a lesser degree Eleanor.) You don't need to worry about that until you get higher tier spells along with the Wizard's Ventite though.

Man, Cyrus' Chapter 2 is really short and simple. Honestly they've all been simple, but that one especially so.

Well it was the last of my primary team's Chapter 2s, so now to start their Chapter 3s. The team is level 30-32 and Tressa's Chapter 3 is recommended at 34, so I'll go there next. The stories really aren't anything too fabulous, though Cyrus' took an interesting turn. Tressa's was cute enough, and Therion's was okay. Ophilia's was boring.

Oooh, are you doing four characters and then another set of 4 from low level? I hadn't though of doing that - that might be neat! I feel like I'd rather have a bunch of characters to experiment with party structure though... but I don't know how annoying it will be to keep everyone up to speed.

I just started this! Started as Cyrus and picked up H'aanit, now doubling back around to get Ophilia and then I might continue going in that direction just because I can, haha.

This game's characters and story structure are DnD as fuck and I completely love it. It's actually super cool because all the original JRPGs were super DnD inspired and then they kind of stopped drawing from that, and now this modern retro game totally doubled down on it.

Quick question, do you have to do the character's intro chapter to recruit them to your party? I always have because... why wouldn't you? But I'm curious if you can just scoop up this person you know nothing about and go on an adventure.

Saying Odyssey doesn't have heart or soul is pretty insane to me.

Galaxy 2 vs. Odyssey comes down to level design vs. world design, and there isn't really a wrong answer. I love both but Odyssey barely edges out a victory. Admittedly this is at least partly because of the zeitgeist - Odyssey dropped at a time when I was getting super sick of (IMO) badly designed open world games and reminded me that world-focused game design doesn't need to be shitty.

Folks who say Galaxy stars are better than Odyssey moons individually are missing the point - if you want that kind of game, Galaxy is of course going to win.

You don't have to hit them in any specific order. Basically how it works is if your combo nails every one of your opponent's weaknesses (including type!) then for the rest of the combo you'll get an increasing damage multiplier and even attacks the enemy would normally resist will be fully effective.

To put it simply, just hit all of their weaknesses in any order and then start freestyling on them any way you want. You have to start over if you drop the combo, though! If it helps, you can actually hold L1 mid-combo to double check which weaknesses you've exploited so far, as they'll be highlighted.

Yeah Berseria's pretty good about difficulty tweaking. It's not on that chart, but higher difficulties drop you better gear more often, which is super huge.

You get both of the difficulty unlocks from optional bosses, neither are missable and you can easily go snag both at any time once you pass their area.

Hard mode never gets very tough but reasonably early in the game you'll have a chance to unlock Evil, which I think is a pretty decent place for the game's difficulty. Fights definitely feel satisfying since on that level you'll dbe punished for playing badly and rewarded for playing well. Sadly you don't unlock Chaos difficulty until really late in the game for some reason - I think that challenge is just about right for this system but you really don't get much time to enjoy it on a fresh run. :(

Like with pretty much every Tales game, it really just depends on how much you enjoy the combat system and how deep you want to dive in. These games go pretty darn deep and there's (almost always, a couple of games excepted) a super satisfying experience there for you if you want to take it up.

To give you a better idea, here's exactly what the difficulties change in Berseria.
